You can learn a lot about these women just from these paintings. You can learn from the first one that the women is a wife a rich man. She has a beautiful dress on that shows her wealth. She also is not Puritan because of her chest showing. In the second you can see that she is Puritan because of her reserved demeanor and her clothing. You can also see in the third painting that the two people are Puritan by their clothes. You can see that the first woman lives a life of luxury in the new world. She can afford such a dress and she can afford a great painting. The other paintings you can see that they might struggle in the New World. They cannot afford the best of artists and their clothes are mainly basic. These people are the majority of people in the new world. They do not come over with much money and struggle in their new lives. These paintings can connect to Anne Bradstreet’s poems. Bradstreet writes about the vanity of worldly things. She is Puritan. She doesn’t appreciate worldly possessions as is taught in the Puritan faith. They only believe that beauty can only relate back to God. This means that all poems and art should be modeled towards God. This is evident in these paintings. The last two paintings are Puritan and you can tell because there are not that many worldly things in the picture. Meanwhile, in the first painting there is worldly possessions like the dress and vase with flowers. These paintings can also relate to Taylor’s poem because of the Puritan aspect. Taylor writes about how God can use him in his life. This is a very Puritan theme. The last two paintings also have an extremely Puritan theme in there blandness and overall uncreativeness.

    3. This analysis is very well written, and i especially liked how you compared Bradstreet and Taylor's poems to the art as well as how you compared life in Europe to life in the colonies.

    4. Instead of saying, "the first one" and "the other paintings", you should tell who is the artist of each painting. Doing so would enable the readers to have a better grasp of what you are discussing. Your observation of the vase and flowers in Copley's painting being seen as a less-puritan culture is awesome!

  2. What can be observed from these three paintings about young America is clear. From the first painting called “Mrs. George Watson” one can observe that America’s youth in this painting is they wanted to live a more free lifestyle. This can be seen is the way that the woman in the picture dressed. Next one can see that her luxurious look showed a young America that wanted more than what they had at the time. Next if you look at the painting called “Young Moravian Girl” you can see more about young America. Firstly you can see how she dressed modestly, and appeared very tight and strict. This reflects the tight and strict moral values of the time that were enforced on America’s youth. The last painting that reflects America’s youth is called “Mrs. James Smith and Grandson”. This last painting shows how America’s youth viewed a proper family. This idea can be seen in the way that they both seem happy, and they are also sharing a novel. However, in each painting there are many differences. The first painting is different from the others in the way that the woman appears the be more lively and rebellious compared to the other two. the second painting is different from the others in the way that woman seems more uptight. This is used to show a young spirit being repressed under a strict society.the last one differs from the others in the way it shows the ideal family that is happy. Each painting connects to Bradstreet's poetry in the way that the first one shows a rebellious woman who lives in a strict society. This is much like Bradstreet who was a rebellious spirit in her poetry, but was repressed by society. The second painting relates to Bradstreet in the way it shows an strict proper woman living in the puritan colonies. This relates to Bradstreet's poetry in the way it somewhat abided by puritan values and morals. The last painting of a grandmother and her grandson showed a happy family. This connects to Bradstreet's poetry in the way she talks of family and motherhood.

these two paintings are very different, and it is immediately apparent which ones are of a puritan woman from the colonies and which one is from Europe. The European woman has more revealing dress and her clothes are very colorful. the puritan women have very modest dress, and it is quite colorless being mostly white and black. the older woman and the child also seems to be puritan because of the lack of colors. The older women and child must have a very close relationship to have a picture taken together. all of the paintings show that puritan life in young american was much more strict than life in europe. The people in the puritan paintings also seem to be smiling, this could show their belief that they don't need earthly possessions to be happy, all they need is God. This belief was expressed in Bradstreet's poem “verses upon the burning of our house” in which she is distraught that her house burns down, but then realizes that she doesn't need any of her possessions to live a happy life. The fact that the European woman is showing more skin and that she is wearing a colorful dress shows that european life was much more relaxed and rules were more loose. The whole point of the puritan culture was religious reform, and it is very clear that these reforms made life very strick. The two paintings of puritan woman connect to Bradstreet's poetry because through the clothing they wear they show the very strict rules of the society that Bradstreet struggled with and went against so much throughout her life and in her poetry. The way of life shown in the puritan paintings is the very thing that Bradstreet opposed, and the reason that she was so popular, as well as disliked.

    1. Miles, what a great paragraph! However, remember to use capital letters;) Especially when saying "Puritan" and at the beginning of sentences. I liked how you made the comparisons to European life and Puritan life. You also made very good connections with Bradstreet's poems as well as her ways of life.

    2. Overall, this was a great response to this puritan art. Moreover, you could have tried to maybe proof read your response. This leads to my main complaint which is the lack of proper grammar, and at the same time it had poor sentence structure as well. Overall, I thought that this was a well thought out idea, and was still well worth my time to read.

  4. These paintings illustrate the differences in the lives of early American women. The values that they hold in their communities are expressed in the three paintings. The first painting shows a woman who belongs to a wealthy family and does not seem to hold Puritan values as was common at the time. The woman would have more freedoms than a woman in a Puritan household as Puritan belief states that only God’s salvation and caring for the household were most important. The second painting shows a woman with a much more reserved appearance and suggests a more modest lifestyle. This painting is not as extravagant as the first one and could be from a conservative family that holds Puritan values. The final painting shows a old woman and her grandson showing that her family is very important to her. The painting relates to Anne Bradstreet’s poetry because she wished to be the perfect housewife by caring for her family while expressing her emotions. The first painting depicts women outside of Puritan households who are allowed to show their feelings to the public. The second and third paintings show the Puritan values of how women should present themselves in public as well as reinforcing the strong value of family in early America. The difference between the first painting and the other two is that the second group of paintings have a much more conservative style. A modest appearance is important to Puritan culture. Anne Bradstreet strongly supported the value of women and their right to expression, as is shown in her poetry. She also writes with a delicate balance between her values and opinions and those of people in society who believe that the social norms of the time were satisfactory. Anne Bradstreet’s poetry draws both on her forward-thinking worldview and her Puritan values and commitments, such as caring for her family and maintaining a strong religious practice.

  5. This first painting named Mrs. George Watson, gives a pretty solid representation of what early America was like. It shows what the modern fashion was at the time, and showed what a more luxurious and richer person would look like, and what they would have. The lushful and fulling clothing worn by the woman in this painting show that in fact, she came from a richer situation. Also the fact that she could afford for a painting of her self from Boston’s most successful artist being that of John Singleton Copley. Also, her direct gaze suggests the grit and character of a new American Society that would eventually emerge in the next ten years or so.

This second poem, Young Moravian Girl, painted by John Valentine Haidt also gives us a great representation of this up and coming young American culture known as Puritanism. This painting represents and suggest the basic style for a middle class puritan woman at the time. She is dressed very moderately, and her body is completely covered, showing barely any skin, really other than her face. If this was a painting of a woman with a lowered piece of clothing in the chest area, you would know that it did not come from this Puritan time of early America.

This third and final painting, Mrs. James Smith and Grandson, created by Charles Willson Peale gives another symbolic view of early America from a different style of artwork. You see in this painting that Mrs. James Smith is holding a book for her grandson, and the grandson is observing it and studying from it. This shows the way the culture would go for Puritans. The knowledge of the grandpeople of this time period would be passed down to the youth, and reading was an essential part of growth for the kids of this time.

  6. The viewer of these paintings can assume that the women in the paintings lived very different lives. These paintings present different lifestyles in the Puritan time. The woman in the first painting, Mrs. George Watson, is not Puritan clearly because of the way she is dressed and the expensive type of fabric her dress is made of. She is probably a rich woman from a big city. Puritans usually wore plain, modest, simple clothing. The woman is also holding a delicate vase, which would not have been owned by a Puritan because they did not believe in owning something that was not necessary. The other two women were Puritans because of what they are wearing, and the simplicity of their paintings. Even though there is a large age difference between the two Puritan women, they are wearing modest, plain clothing. The Puritan women probably had harder lives in America because they were not rich like the first woman is perceived to be.

The women are different because of their age. Mrs. George Watson seems like a young adult, the young moravian girl seems like a teenager, and the Grandmother is much older than either of them. Mrs. George Watson also seems rich and not Puritan, as opposed to the other two paintings, because of what is shown in the pictures.
The paintings connect to Anne Bradstreet’s poetry because of the common themes of modesty, women, and Puritanism. Anne Bradstreet wrote about typical things that women dealt with in the same time period as these paintings. She tried to keep her poetry modest by apologizing frequently and writing about things that would be accepted by her society. This is similar to the two paintings of the Puritan women because the women are covered up with their clothing so that they will not offend anyone. Their paintings are also very simple and not ornate. The first painting is similar to Anne Bradstreet’s poetry because she broke some rules and expectations with her writing just like the wealthy woman did in the picture.

You can learn that each of these women had a different lifestyle in America. In the first picture the women was more privileged than the others. She had nicer clothing and her dress was more revealing showing she was not following all Puritan beliefs. In the second picture you can tell that the woman was more simple in her clothing suggesting that she was a Puritan and following her faith and its morals. In the final picture you can tell that the women is knowledgable and that she is teaching something to her grandson, this suggests that in her life she was successful and raised a happy family. In this painting the women are different they are all wearing different clothing, implying they lead different lifestyles. One woman is wearing a nice dress, showing that she has wealth, and the dress she is wearing is low cut around her chest showing she is not following the ideas of Puritans at the time. Another woman is wearing a nice shirt with a skirt, showing that she is following her religion and is a middle class in the Americas. The next woman is sitting next to her grandchild showing she raised a family and is a successful woman. These women relate to Bradstreet's poetry by showing some of the things she believed in, that Puritan beliefs were important like two of the paintings, and that the beliefs were not always followed and when they were not the person seemed out of place. This is shown by the woman who is wearing the nice, low cut dress. That is one way that Bradstreet's work is shown through these paintings, another is that connects to the puritan woman wearing the nice dress because she did not always follow the rules and do what she was supposed to according to her faith,

  8. What these three paintings show especially, is how women in America during Puritan Ages came from different backgrounds and classes. Mrs. Watson was the wife of a wealthy merchant, the young girl appears to be from more of a middle class, and the third pictures shows Mrs. Smith in the loving position of a grandmother. The first photo represents the lack of Puritan faith in Mrs. Watson’s life as she wears a more revealing dress. The second photo is very subtle and the girl appears to be dressed very modestly, showing signs of Puritan faith. The final photo is completely different as if represents women’s role as motherly figures. You can learn about these women’s backgrounds from these photos as well as the classes they come from. This help represents America by showing that not all women were the same back in the 1700s and these three photos help represent the three types of women there were. The women are different most specifically by how they are dressed, but also through their appearance of age, what else is in the picture, and their story (except for the “Young Moravian Girl”). These women most specifically connect to Bradstreet’s art through their signs of their roles as women. Mrs. Watson shows that how she dresses will not affect her way of life which goes along with Bradstreet’s idea of feminism. The young girl represents a more simplistic way of life and the common woman back in the 1700s. The third woman represents not only just a mother, but a grandmothers role back in the 1700s as it was her number one duty to take care of the children. They all represent Bradstreet as well. They show her features of being bold, yet simple as well as understanding her role as a mother and how important it was to her. These three paintings really sum up what women were like in the Puritan days and they tie closely with the poems of Anne Bradstreet.

  9. From these three paintings presented on art during and around the times of the Puritans, one could tell many various parts of their lives. For the painting titled “Mrs. George Watson” one could learn that when the actual art was painted, the Puritan ideals were starting to be phased out for more “modern” one at the time. Evidence to support this is the clothing that the women is wearing in the painting being much more different than those of the other two. For the other two paintings, one could learn that ,based on the clothing, Puritan ideas were very much in use and life was just plain. The women are all different from each other and it is quite apparent in the paintings themselves. “Mrs. James Smith and Grandson” is different because it shows a different of Puritan life through an older person, unlike the others. It does have a major similarity with the next painting, “Young Moravian Girl” with the clothing being very similar in the two of them. The painting that “Mrs. James Smith and Grandson” has most in difference with would be “Mrs. George Watson” because that one shows a younger person who has more “modern” clothing, to show a difference in thinking between the two time periods. “Young Moravian Girl” is different because it shows a perspective of a younger Puritan woman. The last painting, “Mrs. George Watson” is different because it shows a younger person who has the ideals that came very soon after Puritanism started to “get out of style”. All of these paintings do all connect back to the poems of Anne Bradstreet in their own ways. In “Young Moravian Girl” it is that it shows the young and strong Puritan views Anne had in her poetry. “Mrs. George Watson” showed the different ideas that Anne had which didn't really go with the mainstream ideas of Puritans. Lastly is “Mrs. James Smith and Grandson” which shows the level of wisdom and understanding in Bradstreet’s poems.

  10. From looking at the art, you can tell that the women all lead very different lifestyles. In the first picture, you can tell that the woman is the wife or daughter of a wealthy man in the colonies. You can tell that the lady is not a Puritan by her lavish dress and surroundings. In the second painting, you see that the woman is a Puritan by the way that she dresses and probably lives a simple lifestyle like almost all Puritans did. In the 3rd painting, you can see that the woman is part of a wealthy family by the clothes the boy is wearing, but you can tell that she is older and more of a conservative woman by the way she dresses. The women are different because the first and last are wealthy and probably live a grand lifestyle based on their surroundings and their attire. The second woman is different because she is a Puritan and lives a very pragmatic and boring lifestyle. They are also different because the woman in the first painting because she looks like she could be the wife of a wealthy settler in the colonies, the second lady looks like she is probably the daughter of a conservative Puritan sometime in the time of the Great Awakening, and the lady in the third painting looks like she is older, like she could be the grandmother of the boy in the painting. That is unusual because people usually died early on in life because they didn’t have superior medical supplies and medication. Her age can be indication of living later on in history than the other two women, or being wealthy and able to afford a doctor and medical care. The paintings connect to Anne Bradstreet’s poetry because she was a Puritan, like the lady in the second painting, which is very simple, but she broke some of the Puritan writing rules. The other two women connect more to Taylor’s poetry because he broke the Puritan writing rules of being simple and concise, just as the ladies in the first and third paintings are wearing more extravagant clothing.

These women first of all are all in different stages in their life. The woman that is in the youngest stage is the one of the “Young Moravian Girl,” she looks to be in her early teens and seems to be relatively happy. The second painting is of the next woman in the second youngest stage or middle stage of the three paintings and that is “Mrs. George Watson,” and this painting shows how she looks to be in her twenties stage and she is more grown up than the teenage painting of the “Young Moravian Girl.” The third painting is a painting of a woman in the third and oldest stage and this painting was of, “Mrs. James Smith and Grandson,” and this shows the older woman or grandmother as being way older than the women in the first two paintings and this is the difference of all the pictures, that they have three women in the pictures in different stages in their life. I can learn from these paintings of these women that time moves on and that you will get older and have more responsibilities and one day you will be old enough to where you aren’t the child anymore, it will be where your children are having children and you will be their Grandmother or Grandfather. This also teaches me that I should cherish every moment that I have throughout my whole lifetime of different stages. The paintings connect to Bradstreet’s poetry because her poetry was about a lot of personal things and these pictures are kind of like pictures to show the person and what they have to share isn’t really any of the viewers business so they show the personal side of the women and what they look like and kind of show what responsibilities they have as in the painting of the Grandmother and her grandson.

  12. Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor’s writing pieces have many connections with the works of John Singleton Copley, John Valentine Haidt, and Charles Willson Peale. Anne Bradstreet would write poems about her life as a Puritan woman, but her pieces of work were considered not normal due to the fact that she would discuss miscarriages, death at birth, and other personal information that was not commonly written about. Edward Taylor wrote the poem “Huswifery”, and that poem is a metaphor for Taylors urge to be closer to God, and live under God. John Singleton Copley’s piece called “Mrs. George Watson” connects with Anne Bradstreet because of the more risque nature of the painting. The woman in the painting has bulging cleavage, she is wearing a bright red colored dress, and she has skin showing in multiple places. These are all suggestions that the woman in the painting did not follow societies normal agenda or wardrobe suggestion. Charles Willson Peale’s piece called “Mrs. James Smith and Grandson”, Peale shows an extremely conservative woman sitting with her grandson. This woman is most likely Puritan, and follows the recommended clothing that women should wear. She is wearing dull colors, her hair is covered, her arms are covered, and she has absolutely no cleavage showing. This woman is completely different from the woman in Copley’s painting. This woman connects most with Taylor’s poem because she is wearing what the church wants her to in order to achieve a more close connection with God. The last painting is by John Valentine Haidt, and it is called “Young Moravian Girl”. The woman in this painting is a thorough mix of the two previous paintings. The woman is wearing a dress, her hair is covered, her cleavage is not present, but her arms are showing, and she has a red bowtie. This may suggest that the woman is accustom to following the rules, but likes to show a wild side. This painting connects with Anne Bradstreet because there is some religious aspect, but there is also rebellion showing.

  13. In the oil painting of Mrs. James Smith and Grandson, the women and grandson are dressed somewhat elegantly and fully clothed. By the looks of the picture they are middle class Puritans and have enough money for an average categorized person. Mrs. James Smith is older, maybe mid 40’s, and is fully clothes with no skin showing. Their lives in America looked like they were rough, but could get by with what they had. It seems like the woman struggled a little, but not as much. The oil painting of The Young Moravian Girl is shown as petite and has a long body shape. The young girl almost looks unproportional and during that time dressed elegantly. She is also fully clothed with very little skin showing besides her arms. Her dress seems tight and more expensive, which seems as if she is higher than the middle class. The young Moravian girl’s life in America seems luxuriant, by the way she is presented in the picture. As small as she may seem in that dress, I can see she was fed well and the economy was stable. The oil painting of Mrs. George Watson is more scandalous by the way her dress dips low in the front. She is showing more skin and is dressed in vibrant color. She is different from the other two because of the way her hair is made, which is neat and well attended to. Her life in America seemed splendid and she lived a life of luxury. By the looks of her hair, makeup, and the way she is dressed, she lived a wealthy life.
Mrs. James Smith is different from the rest of the women because she is older and lived a less extravagant life. Her clothing and the way she was attended to, by her hair and makeup, that she was poorer. The young Moravian girl was dressed more elegantly, making her an upper class citizen. Her hair isn’t showing and her whole body is covered, but her arms. That could be a sign of respect for her culture. The oil painting of Mrs. George Watson stands out from all the rest because her portrait contains bright color and there is an object in her hand. She dresses more luxuriant and shows more skin than the other women. Her hair is done up and the way she is posing is different from the other women. She stands upright with her hand holding her dress, and the Moravian girl is positioned oddly with her arms out, but the oil painting of Mrs. James Smith is interesting. She holds a book for her grandson, and is the other woman to convey a theme or idea, such as an importance for education.
The paintings connect to Anne Bradstreet’s poetry because of the main reason that they are all Puritans and the woman are modest. The oil painting of Mrs. James Smith and her grandson is a direct correlation with Puritans and their education. All of the oil paintings convey a strong woman that is Puritan and Anne Bradstreet stood up for women’s rights and strived for equality of men and women. This relates to how Anne Bradstreet views a strong independent Puritan woman who has the upper hand and in this case isn’t a man.

  14. These pieces of puritan art shows a lot about young America. The way the people were dressed showed the modesty of their culture. The women wore a clothing around their neck and head. The women from England in one of the pictures was the exact opposite of the puritan women. The England women showed more skin than the puritan women. The art showed the different cultures during this time period and how the beliefs are shown through the clothing. The values of both people are different which was showed in the art. In Anne Bradstreet's poems she described her beliefs about material things and how God should be above all else. That idea is portrayed in the art with the modesty of the clothing and expressions. In Edwards sermon he says that people need to repent and make sure God is important which also connects with the puritan beliefs. The picture of the England women showed how Edwards thought of people which was as sinners. From these portraits I learned about the society of different people during this time period. The women in the photos were different in the clothing and even the expressions that they were making. The puritan women seemed very mild and proper. The other women was more confident and a revealing outfit. These photos are iconography for the poems and sermon because it reflects directly of what they were saying. The photo with the women and her grandson shows how men also wore modest clothing and that it was all kinds of ages and that the beliefs Puritans had were how they raised and taught children. This also showed how reserved the puritans had to be with their religion compared to the other people during this time. The art was helpful to understand the way certain people dressed during this time period and reflected on the idea of not giving attention to material things.

  15. Mrs. George Watson by John Singleton Copley. This painting shows that young America had citizens who valued women and their beauty. The painting displays their value for female beauty through the use of subject in the painting’s clothing. The woman’s clothing is decorative and promiscuous. The color of her dress is bright and the designs on it are girly and intricate. Young Moravian Girl by John Valentine Haidt. This painting shows that young America had citizens who valued simplicity and modesty. The woman in the painting has modest clothing on. Her dress is plain colors and although there is a bow around her neck it is not vivacious. Mrs. James Smith and Grandson Charles Willson Peale. This painting shows that young America had citizens who valued modesty but also valued women. In the painting the woman is wearing modest clothing but the clothing is also girly as it has ruffles and a bow on the woman’s head. The child with her could also symbolize their value of women because women are the ones that give birth and in the past it was highly common for women to die during childbirth. Something that we can learn about each of these women is that they had differing values. We can also learn that their lives were different in America as represented because they are dressed differently. The women in the paintings are different because of what they are wearing and how they are posing. In the first painting the woman has a more flamboyant appearance. In the second painting the woman has modest clothing on that is also simple. In the third painting the woman has modest but stylish clothing on. These paintings are connecting to Anne Bradstreet's poems because they were all created during the same time period. The paintings and Bradstreet’s poems also connect because they focus on women and their values.

The ways that the three paintings reflect about “young America” is through the way they are dressed in the picture and the things that they display in the paintings. In two of the three paintings, a child with a mother in one and just a woman in the other, they are all dressed very conservatively. There are no low cut dresses or any short dresses. Everything comes up to their neck and covers their bodies all the way down to the floor. Another thing I noticed about the two paintings is how the little boy is holding a bible of some sort. This shows how the “young America” was based a lot on religion and how many people were religious based people. In the other painting with just one women, it showed her in a low cut dress, fancy dress. I made the connection that she was a women in “young American” who grew up in wealth and did not have much of a religion. Other ways that the two more conservative paintings relate back to Bradstreet’s poems are how they each portray a certain lifestyle. Bradstreet shows that she is Puritan even though she pushes many boundaries. These paintings also show how they are Puritan. It is easy to tell by the way they are dressed. The other painting that is not as conservative as the first two are like Bradstreet in the way that she is pushing the limits. Although the woman in the painting may not be Puritan, she is still risking putting that much of her body out there, which may cause consequences. The use of iconography used in the two Puritan paintings are shown with how each of them are dressed. They clearly refelct different values than Mrs.George Watson does. It is all shown within the painting, mainly by the clothes that they are wearing. Overall, it is clearly shown just through a painting how people have different values. Just by the clothing that they wear, it was easy for me to tell who was Puritan and who was not.

    1. Great analysis, Lil. Only thing I noticed is you used first person once, but other than that it was very good. I noticed a lot of the same things you did in the pictures. Good job!:-)

    2. This was a great response. You used very good examples. I liked how you talked about the dresses and the way they were styled reflected their beliefs. Remember to proofread. Amazing Job!

    Puritain women

You can learn a lot by looking at these three women and their lives in America by looking at their portraits Mrs. George Watson in the first portrait, is likely not puritan. Her clothing is more revealing than that of the other women; which shows that she does not share the modest ideas of other puritan women. On the other hand, the young Moravian girl is dressed very conservatively, which is very plain and a very puritan way to be dressed. Finally Mrs. Smith and her grandson are also very conservative. The older woman is dressed in a very non-flashy fashion, which contrasts, however, to that which the grandson is wearing which looks slightly dressier and looks a little wealthier. These three women look very different from one another; the young girl seems to be dressed a lot more conservatively and plainly while the first woman seems to be dressing to show her wealth and value. The old woman’s clothing appears very plain as well, it also contrasts against her grandson whom is wearing a much more dressy looking outfit. These three paintings connect to Bradstreet’s poetry because they capture the essence of her poetry. The first of Mrs. George Watson relates to Bradstreet’s early themes of feminism, while the portrait of the young girl relates to her themes of puritanism and the last one of the grandmother seems to connect to themes of motherhood which are revealed in her poetry.

    1. I liked how you broke down the woman and grandson in the third picture into two different social classes.

  19. Puritan Art Blog
Mrs. George Watson was a wife of a wealthy Boston merchant which would explain her extravagant look that she contains. She seems to have a wild look for the time of the painting wearing a low cut dress and a very bright dress. She didn't come to America to follow a more strict law system like the puritans or the Moravian girl, but she came for more personal freedom that wasn't given to her in Europe. This painting is most like “Prologue” where Bradstreet explains she’s going to be herself in her writing and not take a certain style because that’s what’s wanted of her.
The young Moravian girl does not contain much information, but you can see she lives a simple life where she most likely came to the new world for religious purposes and to freely devote her life to God. She does not try to grab attention in the picture she just smiles and has a humbled stature to herself. She is nothing like the extravagant Mrs. Watson, she seems to know what she came to the new world to do and plans on continuing to do so. She is like “Verses Upon the Burning of Our House” and “The Vanity of All Worldly Things” because she does not have the look that she is worried about possessions, but more about living out a devout, modest life.
Mrs. James Smith and Grandson is a painting of a woman and her grandson that does not have certain information surrounding it. Many inferences can be made about these two, but all we know is that the person in the painting isn't Mrs. James Smith, but Mrs. Patrick Campbell because the woman remarried. This is unlike either of the two previous picture because this one describes the story of a woman who lost love, but found new love to replace it. It also tells a story of a boy who lived a short, questionable life where the choices he made weren't always favored, it shows that the type of house he grew up in though full of love was broken and he created poorly to the situation. This painting seemed to connect with “Before the Birth of One of Her Children” because after everything choice this woman has made good and bad she still cares about the grandson trying to help him along the right path. This painting truly backs the idea that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover and that until you know the background of the painting you really have no idea what’s going on.

  20. It is easy to tell that the woman in the first painting doesn't live a Puritan lifestyle. Her dress is very un-Puritan like, a low neck with the it being colored a pinkish-red and white. It also looks like she came from a family with money. The dress is also probably made from nice and expensive fabric. Not everybody that came over from Britain was Puritan. She was most likely one of those that wasn't. In the second picture the lady is in more Puritan attire. She is plainly dressed in white and dark colors. She also has some cloth holding her hair up and covered. The fabric is also most likely not as nice as the fabric used for the dress in the first picture. Her dress is not as revealing as the dress in the first painting. In the third picture the old lady looks like she was a Puritan. She is also dressed in plain colored clothes and has cloth covering her hair. The last two women don’t look like they come from very rich families like the first picture. From their attire they appear to come from ordinary families. Puritan women were also not interested into fashions, primarily because their beliefs would not allow it. The lady in the first painting could have been interested in fashion. With not being Puritan she could dress how she wanted to show off different styles. These paintings connect to Bradstreet’s poetry because she was a Puritan and she followed Puritan beliefs, but in her writings she wrote about things there were disliked by Puritans. This could relate to the dress of Puritans. There was a way for Puritan women to dress and there was a way that was not accepted. How the woman in the first painting dressed would not be accepted by Puritan standards.. How the women in the last two paintings dressed would be accepted by Puritans. The Puritans had very strict standards and if they were not followed the people or person would be heavily criticized.
